| Applications | Xylitol also inhibits the growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Xylitol was indeed superior to other polyols such as sorbitol or equal to that of topical fluoride in its anti-caries effect. Possessing approximately 33% fewer calories, xylitol is a lower-calorie alternative to table sugar.
