Applications

Astilbin can act as an insecticide against Anticarsia gemmatalis and Spodoptera frugiperda. It shows in vitro antibacterial activity and activity on burn wound healing. Astilbin is used in traditional Chinese medicine.

P-glycoprotein and Multidrug Resistance Protein 2 might play important roles in limiting the bioavailability of those compounds. Drugs which are the inhibitors of P-glycoprotein or Multidrug Resistance Protein 2may increase the oral bioavailability of astilbin or taxifolin and the possibility of unwanted drug–food interactions. The increased expression of P-glycoprotein in Caco-2 cellsmay serve as an adaptation and defense mechanism in limiting the entry of xenobiotics into the body.

We revealed its unique immunosuppressive activity, a selective inhibition against activated T lymphocytes. This characteristic of astilbin is beneficial for the treatment of human immune diseases. After incubation of astilbin with rat liver microsomal/cytosolic fractions, we detected a new metabolite of astilbin and isolated it from the culture solution. and the metabolite inhibited picryl chloride–induced ear swelling in mice and suppressed the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α and interferon-γ, similarly to astilbin. The metabolite was identified as 3’-O-methylated astilbin by NMR.

Astilbin may inhibit delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions through selectively suppressing the lymphocyte functions, including cell migration, via down-regulating MMP activity.

Astilbin showed neither any cytotoxicity to nor influence on Con A-induced proliferation of spleen cells from naive mice, while CsA showed a dose-dependent cytotoxicity and inhibition of the proliferation. Astilbin may act as an efficient therapeutic agent for arthritis like CsA but with less toxicity. Its mechanism includes a selective suppression on lymphocyte functions via reducing MMP and NO production.
